You are warmly invited to the launch of
James Harpur's new verse memoir,
The Magic Theatre
Thursday 20th March at 7.00 pm.
Cranleigh School, Horseshoe Lane, Cranleigh, Surrey, GU6 8QQ
Drink, food and good cheer guaranteed, and even late-70s music.
Following on from his prize-winning account of his school days in The Examined Life, James now recounts the ups and downs, the pratfalls and the poetry, of his student years at Cambridge: read about a shock visit by a delegation of Cranleigh masters and having to call them by their first names; his bafflement at his first ever lecture – on ‘Jack and Jill went up the hill’; the loneliness, the longing for family healing, the insecurities, the camaraderie, and his vain attempts to make a go of student drama.
Relive the student life against the zeitgeist of the Sex Pistols and the Bee Gees – and join James’s odyssey through a trail of books, a broken love affair, riotous parties, scary professors and toe-curling auditions. Be there and be square.
