Stravinsky The Soldier's Tale
The Little Concert Ensemble with Tom Dickinson (narrator/vocals)
Stravinsky's dramatic masterpiece 'The Soldier's Tale' with words by Charles-Ferdinand Ramuz was first performed in September 1918 and celebrates its centenary this month. Scored for narrator and a septet of violin, double bass, clarinet, bassoon, trumpet, trombone and percussion, it tells the story of a soldier who trades his beloved violin with the devil in return for unlimited riches and is wickedly tricked. The Little Concert Ensemble perform Stravinsky's music alongside contemporary works by Warlock, Scriabin and Gershwin.
