Henry Woodyer, the architect of the original School buildings, did not leave foundation stones in his buildings, preferring to much simpler marks. At Cranleigh there are two simple stone engravings, originally found on the end of a block to the west of Hall which is now incorporated within the Connaught block. One engraving carries the initials ‘SCS’, standing for Surrey County School, Cranleigh’s original name, while the other carries the date 1864. Although this pre-dates the opening of the School by a year, it seems Woodyer used the date building started. Cast iron guttering on the Chapel cloisters shows the same date.
