Cranleigh Locomotive

The name plate from the locomotive named after the School now hangs in the Reception. The engine itself was one of 39 built at Eastleigh for Southern Railway between 1930 and 1935 which were named after famous public schools. Cranleigh, which came into service in 1935, was No. 36, one of the last batch to be launched in June 1935. It visited Cranleigh station in November of that year, a publicity event which allowed boys from the School to be pictured clambering all over the engine. However, it never worked the Guildford-Horsham line and spent most of its life operating in Kent. It was taken out of service in December 1962. The School subsequently acquired one of the engine’s nameplates.
