Henry Peek, responding to comments made by Sir Stafford Northcote at Speech Day in July, came forward with an offer to pay all the costs of a new chapel which was estimated to be around £3000.

The Council also decided on completing the remaining buildings of the School so as to be able to receive 300 boys. The Headmaster appealed to the parents of the boys for subscriptions towards an organ suitable for the new chapel and upwards of £130 was soon promised.

On August 12 the first fatality on the Guildford-Horsham railway since its opening in October 1865 occurred when 81-year-old James Boucey died after being struck by the buffer of the engine just outside the Village station.
